Books and Blogs

I don’t spend everyday wandering around taking photos. I also read various blogs online and books on my Kindle. Here are some I especially like.

All Systems Red by Martha Wells won the 2018 Hugo Award for Best Novella. In this first book in the Murderbot series Wells has created a Security Robot character who has hacked his own programming and freed himself–but he is reluctant to disclose it. While this could become the basis for a serious novel about artificial intelligence and what defines a human, this novel is funny. You’ll love the Murderbot!

In her blog Canadian historian Ann Foster writes bios of famous, semi-famous and little-known people who lived and died in the Tudor World. But these are not straight bios. She writes as if she’s a 19 year old girl explaining the characters on her favorite soap opera or the Kardashian clan to a friend. You will laugh out loud!

The Australian photographer who goes by the online name of Lignum Draco publishes photographs on his blog that are not only beautiful but show his travels around the world in a fresh, original way.

Commando is a memoir written within months after the Boer war in South Africa by a teenager who volunteered to join the Boer forces against the British. As a young man on horseback he regarded the war as an adventure. Many regard this as one of the best war memoirs ever written. I found it fascinating.

Sadly there are only three books in the Annie Szabo mystery series by Meredith Blevins beginning with the Hummingbird Wizard. Many of the characters are gypsies, Romas, and their traditions come into play as Annie solves the mystery. And maybe finds new love. This is free on Kindle Unlimited.
