Since I arrived in New Orleans I’ve taken hundreds of photos of people and places around the city. AND–ta-da!–I’ve managed to organize them into folders. But finding time to write a post about the places and people–difficult. So here are a few photos I’ve selected at random.
This tour of the French Quarter by Segway looked very cool. I didn’t take it, but I might. I have one more week in the city.
These guys looked to be high school students picking up some extra cash after school. Well, on second thought, maybe they’re a bit older. They played well and loud and attracted a big crowd. I only stopped for a short while; I was on my way to Kilwin’s for a root beer float.
Best gumbo and tiny motorcycles at the French Market
The French Market adjacent to the French Quarter beside the river is an enormous crafts and food market. These hand carved motorcycles are impressive for their detail.
This may well be the best vegetarian gumbo in New Orleans. It’s sold at the Meals from the Heart Cafe in the French Market. While the gumbo was amazingly good, the lemonade was unusual and not very lemonade-y.
The Mississippi is high but not quite yet above flood stage in New Orleans. This photo was taken on the $2 ferry to Algiers Point across the river from the city, looking back and south.
And at the end of the trolley tour
When I arrived in New Orleans I decided to ride all the trolleys from one end to the other, getting a kind of slow, cheap city tour. At the last stop of the last trolley I took was this mural — and many others–in the Elysian Fields neighborhood
Near the end of the St. Claude-Rampart trolley line I came across this colorful “tiger” car and two charming little cottages in the Elysian Fields neighborhood. The car and the green house belong to the Crescent City Cats organization, which rescues cats in several locations around New Orleans.
Carrollton preferred for next visit
Yesterday I caught the St. Charles trolley across town to the Carrollton neighborhood and spent an hour walking around in 90 degree heat. It’s an interesting, arty area and I think I’d choose it over the Garden District the next time I visit New Orleans.
After wandering around Carrollton I decided to cool off in the shade by the bayou in nearby Audubon Park. I love the reflections of sky on the water, but the air was absolutely still and meltingly humid.
Once back on the trolley I began to cool off. This photo was taken inside the St. Charles trolley where I discovered that the way they air condition the trolleys is simply by opening the front windows directly ahead of the driver. The trolleys go slow so it is a pleasant breeze!
